Dated Jan 30th 2024.

I have asked a few good souls over the past weeks to look over the website, and have received some good comments on the list. Perhaps most poignant was the question of what movies specifically come to mind when I say that they affected me greatly, and how do I think they might have changed me? The question forced me to think more about the list. I am naming movies that were important to be seen and others That were profoundly memorable. Some movies I love, but educational impact might not be significant or exceptional. For these reasons it can be difficult to choose from the long list ahead of us, a top twenty.

If I were honest with myself, I would be listing mostly musicals and foreign films here, but I’m saving that for another time.

Of The following list, These first 20 probably would be the one’s I would have to choose.

TOP 20 Most Impactful Movies

1- A thousand Clowns- 1965 Directed by Fred Coe. With Jason Robards, Barbara Harris, Martin Balsam, Gene Saks -I loved the story and the location and

I Loved the father bellowing out an ally window to neighbors for an imagined volleyball game. Zany! but, it is the spirit with which I try to live each day.

It might be reasonable to give me a hard time about my first and some other choices.

Many may not play well now these days.

Some movies don’t hold up. Easy Rider was quite a movie but seems silly and contrived when re-seen through a more modern day lens. Still, for me it was it was impactful and the meaningful at the time. Other movies don’t share our current concepts and values anymore.but to continue:

2- Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid -1969- Paul Newman, Robert Redford

- not a particularly deep film but it was one of my favorites growing up.

3- Casablanca-1942- Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre, Ingrid Bergman-Max Steiner Composer and Writer —Classic

4- Rebel Without A Cause.-1955 James Dean- Every kid should watch this movie.

5- Giant-1956 Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean

  * Stands above many for its Civil Rights treatment.

Man o’ man this is a wonderful film on every level and a must see.

6-The Best Years of Our Lives-1946 3 soldiers return home and try to survive the emotional and physical scars of war.

7- The grapes of Wrath. 1940-Henry Fonda, John Carradine

A Dust Belt story of America that is eternal

8- To Kill a Mockingbird- 1962 Gregory Peck- Robert Duval

Boo Radley played by Robert Duval, haunted me. My initial fear of him in the film brought to mind fears I often felt when I caught sight of the homeless and ill on the street of New York when I was quite young. It was a common site, and something west side kids dealt with.

9- Lillies of The field- 1962 Sidney Poitier, Lilia Skala, Stanley Adams, and Dan Frazer Perhaps the most inspiring movie of all-

10- Its a wonderful Life- 1946 A more famous inspirational movie that might be considered a Holiday Film, but I do include it. Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed

11- Contact- 1997-Jodi Foster

I don’t care- The movie brought me back to Asimov, and Arthur C Clarkand I am very much a fan of the cast and the sentiment.

12- Ordinary People. 1980

I’ll never forget my sweet Mary Tyler Moore as she rips into Donald Sutherland with an icy stare, one wont soon forget

13- Sophies Choice- 1982-

A kick in the gut, over and over. When the impossible is asked of us. It makes the viewer feel like furniture in a room, unable to move in the presence of a relationship that is hard to turn away from and hard to bare. It’s a train wreck of sorts, I felt like Nick in the The Great Gatsby, only the pain threshold was so much higher.

14- Deer Hunter 1978 Robert De Nero, Christopher Walken, Merryl Streep

15- Purple Rose of Cairo- 1985- Woody Allan- Mia farrow, Danny Aiello

It’s a comedic romance that gave me great joy and hope over what is

and isn’t possible.

16- The Big Chill. 1983- At that time in my life- It had a vibe that I recognized in myself.

17- Passage To India- 1984-I loved this film- but it was an eye opener. Certainly, many previous movies portrayed well, Britain’s treatment of indigenous populations.

18- AI-2001 The movie is disturbing on multiple levels and although it is pretend fiction/fairy tale/sci fi, I still felt like a six year old being read Bambi for the first time and feeling the immense loss and tragedy. I still think of it from time to time

19- Dances With Wolves -1990 Kevin Costner

Mr. Costner’s narration may seem monotone but it worked well in the backset of this beautifully shot story based in part on the history of treatment of our Native Americans.

20 A River runs through it-1992- Brad Pitt

I found it to be emotionally confusing and that for me is a good thing. The young hero has so much to give us, and he throws it away like yesterdays lunch. It is mind blowing.

I am adding this note to offer my apologies. I’ve left out great and wonderful titles I’m sure. Some are omitted by accident, or worse for not having seen them. I have chosen not to look up or search for any films.

All the film choices are relying on my memory of films I saw and loved for one reason or another. I thought for fun I would avoid going on line and retrieving other people’s lists and so I will add on more as I go on.

This list contains films that have had a great impact on me.

It is not a list of the greatest films ever made. But I don’t believe there is a bad movie on the list

Rather, Movies I particularly enjoyed or I think are important to see..

Some ‘have to be seen’ even if they are difficult to watch. I Know, I know. Ive missed a hundred films more recent and again, mea culpa. There should be time to add more

Hollywood was great for reminding us who we were. It tugged at us to stay on course to be the kind of people we ought to be. The movies we're both escapism and a mirror to catch our own foolish behavior. It’s propaganda for better and for worse. I’m thankful to have grown up in the era that respected such great work

 IMPORTANT:

  I left out intentionally all:

1)   Animated

2)   Musicals

3)   Holiday. with one or two exceptions

4)   Foreign

5)   Superhero

Because they are to be their own lists and just as important

I Look forward to additions and suggestions.  There might be a few dups. I need to go through it more closely. Enjoy.
